Card-sorting

What is it?

Card-sorting is a technique that allows end users to participate in creating the information architecture of a website. Each page or section of the site is represented by a card. Users arrange the cards under open or closed headings, to create intuitive menus.

Card-sorting can be carried out with a moderator using real cards, or remotely, using software that replicates the cards.

How long does it take?

We usually allocate 2 weeks from recruiting targeted users, through carrying out the card-sorting activities, to analysing the findings and reporting on them.

What are the benefits?

Card-sorting is a fast and easy user testing technique that provides quick insight into the way users think content should be grouped on your website.

It is a useful start to the design process, once features and functionality have been established but before any design work has begun.
